OMI is presenting the manifestation West Side Stories from the 21st November till the 22nd December. The international renown history of the urban renewal of the 1970s and 1980s in the Oude Westen in Rotterdam will be the focus of the exhibition. Accompanying tours, lectures and film evenings will show designers, artists and photographers temporary view on this neighbourhood.
The exhibition will draw a picture of the local protests with posters and newspapers, comics and pamphlets of the Aktiegroep Oude Westen. You can listen to the stories of architects and activists, explore the districts problematic situation in the 1970s in film and get a present glimpse through interior pictures taken in 2019. On maps and floor plans you can learn how during the urban renewal more space in the streets was created and housing conditions were subject to experiments. Follow architects and critiques own valuations of this period and ArchitectuurMaken, Studio Verter, Charlie Koolhaas and Bart Isings insights of the current neighbourhood based on maps.
The exhibition is shown at OMI (Schietbaanstraat 21), on the Rijnhoutplein and in the Hobokenpand next to it. The first one is the book presentation of ‘Stadsvernieuwing in Rotterdam’ during the opening of West Side Stories. In this book from nai010 uitgevers the developments in five urban renewal neighbourhoods and their relevance for the present-day Rotterdam are described by Ben Maandag.
